The Veterans Place - transitional housing for homeless Veterans in Northfield Vermont

John Farnham, a resident of The Veterans Place, shows off the gingerbread house that he made and donated to the Mayo Nursing Home. Mr Farnham said he had 70 hours of work in creating the gingerbread house that is covered with pretzel 'logs' on the walls and has Kellog's Mini wheats for shingles. The fence, woodshed & woodpile and outhouse are all made of pretzels and the chimney and walkway are sunflower seeds. The house is lighted and features candy trim. Sally Davidson donated 'big bags' of candy. The house is now on display in the nursing home. Photo by Bill Croney, The Northfield News

Plans for a transitional housing facility for veterans are moving forward in Central Vermont. Veterans' Place -- raised more than 200-thousand dollars in cash, donated services, and loans. The non-profit is now able to apply for a 750-thousand dollar Veterans Administration grant. The group plans to use the money to buy and renovate an old nursing home -- the former Mayo DeLary Home in Northfield. Veterans Place will house up to 26 homeless veterans and their families and provide access to health care. Residents must be alcohol and substance free. Veterans Place will also help veterans find jobs.
