Access to meals

We are the only program in Vermont that provides access to free, nutritious food every day to residents.

We have an experienced part-time cook who also supports the Northfield Senior Center and the local Meals-on-Wheels program. He maintains FDA nutritional guidelines and provides weekly menu plans, often in

coordination with our residents. In addition, the Veterans’ Place has access to the VAMC Registered Dietitian to ensure our meals meet the specific dietary needs of all residents, including those with dietary restrictions.

Transportation Access

Utilizing the Veterans’ Place van, we make, on average, three trips each week to the VA Medical Center in White River Junction for scheduled appointments. Trips are also made to the VA on an “as-needed” basis— sometimes up to twice daily and on weekends—for emergency care. In addition, we provide trips to the social security office, housing offices, employment offices, and Veteran Affairs offices within Vermont, as well as to heath/dental appointments and local shopping venues.

Former residents living close in the Central Vermont area are welcome to get a ride to the White River Junction VAMC for health care. Other Veterans in the area who have never been in the program are also welcome to ride the vans. This has included a 93-year-old World War II Veteran who could no longer drive himself.

In 2019, our two vans drove over 50,000 miles to provide residents, former residents, and local Veterans with access to healthcare and jobs, as well as to grocery and other shopping.

Our staff are either onsite or on-call 24 hours a day, seven days per week, and are well trained in policies and procedures for handling safety and security issues.

Testimonial

“I am one of a number of veterans residing at the Veterans’ Place, Inc. In reflecting on my year I continue to be amazed at the amount of support I have received in a very short period of time: clothing, daily meals, and shelter, to list a few. If you would have told me a year ago that I would be on my way to renting an apartment, saving money for a car, and/or securing a stable job, I would have told you it was impossible. Veterans’ Place, Inc. has in no small way made all of this possible and I am eternally grateful to the staff and those who have donated to make it possible.

Thank You!” - Harry Olin Simpson, current resident
